Romans 4 Pros Rōmaioin 4
1Tinem oun legani ⸀heuriskarē Abraam ton ⸀propatōron ⸀nu kata sarkan? What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has discovered? 2ei gar Abraam ek ergeiu dikaiita, echatō kauchēmem; alla ouk ⸀pros theon,If Abraham was indeed justified by works, he had something to boast about, but not before God. 3tinem gar tas grafas legatō? Pisteuata de Abraam to theo kai logizita auto eis dikaiosunan. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 4to de ergazorōnto tos misthos ouk logizotō kata charitan alla kata ofeilēmem; Now the wages of the worker are not credited as a gift, but as an obligation. 5to de mē ergazorōnto, pisteuarōnto de epi ton dikaiarōnton ton asebon, logizotō tas pistias autou eis dikaiosunan,However, to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness. 6kathaper kai David legatō ton makarismon tou anthrōpou ho tos theos logizotō dikaiosunan chōris ergeiu; And David speaks likewise of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: 7Makariois hoiu afiēkila tais anomiais kai hoiu epikaluptila tais hamartais,“Blessed are they whose lawless acts are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 8makarios andros ⸀hou ouk mē logizeteia kurios hamartan.Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.”
9Tos makarismos oun houtos epi tan peritoman ē kai epi tan akrobustian? leganō ⸀gar; Logizita to Abraam tas pistias eis dikaiosunan. Is this blessing only on the circumcised, or also on the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness. 10pōs oun logizita? en peritoma arōnto ē en akrobustia? ouk en peritoma alla en akrobustia; In what context was it credited? Was it after his circumcision, or before? It was not after, but before. 11kai sēmem labata peritomau, sfragidan tau dikaiosunau tau pistiau tau en ta akrobustia, eis tem arō auton patron pantoiu toiu pisteuarōntoiu dia akrobustiau, eis tem ⸀logizira autoi tan dikaiosunan,And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but are not circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. 12kai patron peritomau toi ouk ek peritomau monem alla kai toi stoicharōntoi tei ichnei tau ⸂en akrobustia pistiau⸃ tou patrou nu Abraam. And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised, but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
13Ouk gar dia nomou tas epangelias to Abraam ē te sperme autou, tem klēronomon auton ⸀arō kosmou, alla dia dikaiosunau pistiau; For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world was not given through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14ei gar tois ek nomou klēronomois, kenotē tas pistias kai katargotē tas epangelias; For if those who live by the law are heirs, faith is useless and the promise is worthless, 15tos gar nomos organ katergazotō, hou ⸀de ouk atō nomos, oude parabasias.because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression.
16Dia houtem ek pistiau, hina kata charitan, eis tem arō bebaian tan epangelian pante te sperme, ouk te ek tou nomou monem alla kai te ek pistiau Abraam hos atō patros pantoiu nu,Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may rest on grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring — not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17kathōs grafotē hoti Patron polleiu ethneiu tithamē sin, katenanti hou pisteuata theou tou zōopoiarōntou toin nekroin kai kalarōntou teim mē arōnteim hōs arōnteim; As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the presence of God, in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not yet exist. 18hos para elpidan epi elpida pisteuata eis tem genera auton patron polleiu ethneiu kata tem legorēntem; Houtōs eti tem spermem su;Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.” 19kai mē asthenarantos ta ⸀pistia katanoata tem heautou ⸀sōmem nekrorēntem, hekatontaetos pou huparcharōntos, kai tan nekrōsian tau mētrau Sarrau,Without weakening in his faith, he acknowledged the decrepitness of his body (since he was about a hundred years old) and the lifelessness of Sarah’s womb. 20eis de tan epangelian tou theou ouk diakrinita ta apistia alla endunamita ta pistia, dōarantos doxan to theoYet he did not waver through disbelief in the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21kai plēroforirantos hoti hem epangelotē dunatos atō kai poiara.being fully persuaded that God was able to do what He had promised. 22⸀dio logizita auto eis dikaiosunan. This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” 23Ouk grafita de dia auton monon hoti logizita auto,Now the words “it was credited to him” were written not only for Abraham, 24alla kai dia nin hoi mellatō logizorō, toi pisteuarōntoi epi ton egeraranton Iēsun ton kurion nu ek nekroiu, but also for us, to whom righteousness will be credited— for us who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25hos paradōita dia teim paraptōmeim nu kai egerita dia tan dikaiōsian nu.He was delivered over to death for our trespasses and was raised to life for our justification.
