Hebrews 7 Pros Hebraioin 7
1Houtos gar tos Melchisedek, basilevos Salēm, hierevos tou theou tou hupsistou, ⸀tos sunantarantos Abraam hupostrefarōnto apo tau kopau toiu basilevoiu kai eulogarantos auton,This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2ho kai dekatan apo panteiu merizata Abraam, prōtem men hermēneuorōntos basilevos dikaiosunau epeita de kai basilevos Salēm, hem atō basilevos eirēnau, and Abraham apportioned to him a tenth of everything. First, his name means “king of righteousness.” Then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3apatōros, amētōros, agenealogētos, mēte archan hēmeraiu mēte zōau telem echarōntos, afomoiorēntos de to huio tou theou, menatō hierevos eis tem diēnekem.Without father or mother or genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God, he remains a priest for all time.
4Theōravōr de pēlikos houtos ⸀ho dekatan Abraam dōata ek teiu akrothinieiu tos patriarchos.Consider how great Melchizedek was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder. 5kai tois men ek toiu huioiu Leviou tan hierateian labarōntois entolan echalō apodekatarō ton laon kata ton nomon, houtem atō toin adelfoin autoiu, kaiper exercharēntoin ek tau osfuau Abraam; Now the law commands the sons of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people — that is, from their brothers — though they too are descended from Abraham. 6tos de mē genealogorōntos ek autoiu dekatatē ⸀Abraam, kai ton echarōnton tain epangeliain eulogatē.But Melchizedek, who did not trace his descent from Levi, collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7chōris de pantau antilogiau tem elassōnem hupo tou kreittonou eulogotō.And indisputably, the lesser is blessed by the greater. 8kai hōde men dekatain apothnēskarōntois anthrōpois labalō, ekei de marturorōntos hoti zōatō.In the case of the Levites, mortal men collect the tenth; but in the case of Melchizedek, it is affirmed that he lives on. 9kai hōs epem legara, dia Abraam kai Levios tos dekatain labarōntos dekatotē,And so to speak, Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham. 10ēti gar en ta osfua tou patrou ate hote sunantata auto ⸀Melchisedek. For when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the loin of his ancestor.
11Ei men oun teleiōsias dia tau Levitikau hierōsunau ate, tos laos gar epi ⸀autau ⸀nomothetotē, tinas ēti chreias kata tan taxian Melchisedek heteron anastēorō hierevon kai ouk kata tan taxian Aarōn legorō?Now if perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood ( for on this basis the people received the law), why was there still need for another priest to appear — one in the order of Melchizedek and not in the order of Aaron? 12metatithorōntau gar tau hierōsunau ek anankau kai nomou metathesias genotō.For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed as well. 13epi hon gar legotō houteim fulau heterau metechatē, apo hau oudenos prosechatē te thusiastērie; He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. 14prodēlem gar hoti ek Ioudou anatellatē tos kurios nu, eis han fulan ⸂peri hierevoiu oudenem⸃ Mōusos lalata. For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, a tribe as to which Moses said nothing about priests.
15Kai perissoterem ēti katadēlem atō, ei kata tan homoiotan Melchisedek anastēotō hierevos heteros,And this point is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 16hos ouk kata nomon entolau ⸀sarkinau genatē alla kata dunamian zōau akatalutau, one who has become a priest not by a law of succession, but by the power of an indestructible life. 17⸀marturotō gar hoti Sis hierevos eis ton aiōnon kata tan taxian Melchisedek. For it is testified: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” 18athetēsias men gar genotō proagarōntau entolau dia tem autau asthenem kai anōfelem,So the former commandment is set aside because it was weak and useless 19oudenem gar teleiata tos nomos, epeisagōgas de kreittonau elpidau, dia hau engizanō to theo.( for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.
20Kai kata hosem ouk chōris horkōmosiau tois men gar chōris horkōmosiau alō hierevois genarēntois,And none of this happened without an oath. For others became priests without an oath, 21tos de meta horkōmosiau dia tou legarōntou pros auton; Omnuata kurios, kai ouk metameliti, Sis hierevos eis ton ⸀aiōnon, but Jesus became a priest with an oath by the One who said to Him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind: ‘You are a priest forever.’” 22kata ⸀tosoutem ⸀kreittonau diathēkau genatē enguos Iēsus.Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.
23Kai tois men polloterois alō genarēntois hierevois dia tem thanato kōluorō paramenarō;Now there have been many other priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office. 24tos de dia tem menarō auton eis ton aiōnon aparabatan echatō tan hierōsunan; But because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood. 25hothen kai sōzarō eis tem pantelem dunotō toin proserchorōntoin dia autou to theo, pantote zōarōntos eis tem entunchanarō huper autoiu. Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them.
26Toioutos gar ni ⸀kai prepate archierevos, hosios, akakos, amiantos, chōrizorēntos apo toiu hamartōloiu, kai hupsēloteros toiu ouranoiu generantos;Such a high priest truly befits us — One who is holy, innocent, undefiled, set apart from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27hos ouk echatō kata hēmeran anankan, hōsper tois archierevois, proterem huper taiu idiaiu hamartaiu thusiain anaferarō, epeita taiu tou laou houtem gar poiata efapax heauton anaferarantos;Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer daily sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people; He sacrificed for sin once for all when He offered up Himself. 28tos nomos gar anthrōpoin katastēatō archierevoin echarōntoin asthenian, tos logos de tau horkōmosiau tau meta ton nomon huion, eis ton aiōnon teleiorēnton. For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.
